Hi, I am also new to the community. I have a 3 year old little boy whom I’m looking for free preschool programs. I was wondering if you have a list of preschool activities for the upcoming spring/summer 2013 season. I see there are great programs at the library, but sad to see most are age 5+ thank you for you help. Kind regards, Andrea

      Hi Andrea,

We have a program starting at the end of June called ‘Kids on the Run’, it’s a fun filled program of various sporting activities for preschool children.
The sign-up night is April 11th and it will be held at the Hubbards Recreation Centre from 6.30pm – 8.00pm. The Recreation Centre is opposite the Hooked Rug Museum between Hubbards and Queensland. If I can help further please let me know.

Hey – thanks for this information! I am excited about pre school age programs, because my son is not 5 until August! I work in the city, so coming to programs during the week day is impossible. I would love to do yoga… but perhaps if it is ever offered in the evening! I would like to do some volunteer work… please add me to your mailing list!

    Hi!
I am new to the area and have a 4 1/2 year old. We desperately need to find some evening and weekend events – i.e. soccer, nature clubs, t-ball, etc… can you let me know what may be coming for the spring?\
    Thanks!

      Hi Jennifer,

First of all, we would like to welcome you to the area.

Hubbards Area Recreation Association (HARA) will be offering a new session of programs at Shatford Memorial Elementary School starting in April. You can check the website at http://www.hubbardsrec.ca, ‘Like’ us on Facebook, and/or follow us on Twitter HARA@HubbardsRec.

You can view the following links for information about community programs/events. Also, if you have questions you can email me directly at tanyahara@gmail.com and I am happy to help. Other contacts are Sam Wilson at Aspotogan Heritage Trust at swilson@aspotogan.org, and Sandra Labor at sandralabor@eastlink.ca.

Aspotogan Heritage Trust (AHT) http://www.aspotogan.org/ . They have a link for “What’s Happening” where you can see what is upcoming.
J.D. Shatford Library http://www.halifaxpubliclibraries.ca/branches/locations/jd-shatford.html has things going on as well.

We are in the process of setting up an outgoing email for upcoming programs and can add your email address to this list if you like.

HARA is also looking for new faces to help in organizing programs. Feel free to come to our meetings and/or offer suggestions as to what you would like to see. If there is a program you, or someone you know, would like to organize and run you are welcome to do so. We need volunteers for the upcoming summer programs running at the Rec Centre. We will be running soccer, t-ball, baseball, and a preschooler age program. Currently, we are running a Yoga class for all ages at Shatford School on Tuesday afternoons from 2:15pm – 3:00pm. To register for programs you can call Sam at 857-1133.

      Thank you for your comment.

I wonder why there are no soccer opportunities for grades 3-6? Also I find timies for many elementary-age kids on weeknights are too late. They should end by 7:30 at the lastest, the school bus comes so early and kids need their sleep. I often have to say no to my child about rec activities because I feel they are too late on schoolnights.

Hi Jennifer, thank you for your comment. Program times are set by the volunteer running the program and usually revolves around their personal work schedules. If we had a volunteer for grades 3-6, we would definitely run a program, if you know of someone who is interested in running a HARA program we’re always happy to hear from them.
